Imperfect Sustainability: Part I
Sustainability one step at a time
small contributions for big changes
In recent years, environmental and social awareness has seemingly taken off in our society. While things aren’t perfect, there seems to be a general understanding that our consumption habits are simply no longer sustainable. With more and more brands popping up and focusing on things like reusable packaging/containers, biodegradable materials, and sustainable fabrics, it’s easier than ever to become a more responsible member of the earth. Right? Not so quick. Putting Earth and people first, like truly, is more nuanced than it sounds and quite a tall order.
Think about it, you buy a shirt, love it for years, and decide to donate it. Your shirt gets passed around for a few more years before finding its way to a landfill where it proceeds to degrade slowly and release harmful vapor into the environment. Where did you go wrong? Do you really deserve to say you practice sustainability? While this question is valid, it is the exact line of thinking that creates blockages for those who wish to participate in environmentalism. The quest for perfection here is a noble aspiration but close to impossible to extrapolate into every area of your life. The truth is, starting small, starting with anything, will lead you on a journey where you’ll find opportunities to be more sustainable.
It’s alright if you start out imperfect. Sustainability is not a zero-sum game, any way you contribute is worth it and matters. Like I’m sure you’ve heard: “Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll see further”.
